The production of phosphorus trichloride in China has a history of 60 years, with numerous manufacturers. In the 10 years from 2003 to 2013, the production capacity of phosphorus trichloride rapidly expanded from 1.15 million tons/year to 2.29 million tons/year, while the downstream consumption only increased from 320,000 tons to 940,000 tons. Serious excess capacity, even far more than the global total demand for phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus trichloride urgently need to expand the industry, strengthen the in-depth development, reshaping the industrial pattern.
Throughout the world, although the number of phosphorus trichloride enterprises is not large, all of them have developed a complete industrial chain, such as Monsanto and ICL-IP in North America, and Ittel, Rhodia and Lanxess in Western Europe. However, the industrial chain of Chinese phosphorus trichloride production enterprises is relatively simple, and their products are relatively backward. Some enterprises even maintain the production level of some intermediates, and their competitiveness is weak.
For example, in the field of flame retardants, the main products of Jiangsu Jacques Technology Co., Ltd. are organophosphorus flame retardants. Compared with the world's largest flame-retardant manufacturer, Yabao Group, its products cover almost all flame retardant varieties such as organophosphorus flame retardants, halogenated flame retardants and inorganic flame retardants. In addition, the main products of domestic phosphorus trichloride manufacturers also have a certain gap with those of European and American enterprises. In Europe and American regions, the main organic phosphorus series flame retardant is TCPP, while low-end TCEP is gradually phased out, and TCEP is still the most important organic phosphorus series flame retardant product in China.
Take the field of pesticides. Organophosphorus pesticides are the main downstream consumption area of phosphorus trichloride, accounting for 70% of the total consumption of phosphorus trichloride. In 2013, the sales volume of phosphorus trichloride downstream pesticide varieties was 9.2 billion US dollars, accounting for 16% of the global total sales volume of pesticides, among which glyphosate sales reached 5.6 billion US dollars. China is the largest producer of glyphosate, accounting for more than 60 percent of global output but only about 25 percent of global output. The unfavorable development in depth restricts the development of the industry and makes the phosphorus trichloride weak in the field.
Although the problem of phosphorus trichloride industry is obvious, the development space is wide. From a global perspective, organophosphorus pesticides still maintained a growth rate of about 6%, phosphorus flame retardants, chelating agents and plastic additives growth rate is also above 3%, the development trend is stable; The domestic demand for phosphorous flame retardants increased by 9.4%, for pesticides by 7.8%, and for plastic additives and chelating agents also maintained a rapid growth of about 6%.
While seeing the bright prospects of this industry, domestic phosphorus trichloride enterprises should be aware that if they want to occupy a place in the long-term development, they must expand the industry and strengthen the in-depth development, otherwise they will be eliminated sooner or later.
